In a world first, we donated our title sponsorship of the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Races to Cancer Research UK, creating a new partnership model to drive social good.
Rowing enthusiasts gather every spring to thrill in the highly competitive Oxford and Cambridge Boat Races, run on the River Thames in London, England. The race inspires high performance and also a new model of corporate sponsorship. Previously sponsored by BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management, a BNY Mellon company, in 2016 – in a world first – we donated our title sponsorship of the annual event to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the world’s largest independent cancer research organization.
Now known as the Cancer Research UK Boat Races, the charity receives substantial exposure through the event, with BNY Mellon continuing to partner on fundraising activities. “Today, we are as invested in the future of finance as we are in the communities in which our more than 50,000 colleagues around the globe live and work. We know our success as an organization is built on pulling together with our partners to achieve an outcome greater than the sum of our parts. We hope this form of corporate sponsorship will become more commonplace with other companies also choosing to make corporate sponsorships drivers of change for good in their communities,” said Michael Cole-Fontayn, BNY Mellon EMEA Chairman.
David Searle, Executive Director of The Boat Race Company Ltd, acknowledged the historic move: “In BNY Mellon and Newton Investment Management we knew we had sponsors who would do something out of the ordinary. After making history with the introduction of The Women’s Boat Race to the Tideway in 2015, this amazing gesture is breaking new ground in sponsorship.”
