BNY Mellon’s Winter Pensions Summit puts the spotlight on risk

Risk, innovation and the ongoing evolution of the markets are the central themes at this week’s BNY Mellon Winter Pensions Summit in London.

The centrepiece of the event will be a case study presentation and associated panel session on the topic of de-risking, led by Andrew Waring, chief executive of Ensign Pensions, which oversees the Merchant Navy Officers Pension Fund. The session will also feature panellists from Towers Watson, Rothesay Life and Insight Investment.

The day will open with demonstrations in BNY Mellon's newly-opened EMEA Innovation Centre of how the company is empowering its pension clients through technology.

Experts from BNY Mellon, Insight Investments and Newton Investment Management will then examine the trajectory of global markets and investment trends and host a Q&A session on market volatility, opportunities and threats.

The closing keynote address will take a different spin on the topic of risk, in the shape of a presentation by Formula One industry expert Mark Gallagher, entitled ‘Managing risk in the fast lane’.

“Speaking to our pensions clients across Europe, the challenges they face are clear,” says Lawrence Langenhan, EMEA Head of Asset Owners at BNY Mellon. “Persistently low interest rates, wide-ranging regulatory and market change, and increased demands for enhanced transparency and risk governance remain top of their agenda.

“In addition, the complexity of alternative investments and their attendant requirements in terms of operational infrastructure are also contributing to a challenging environment for pension funds. There is constant pressure to embrace and drive innovation, while – in line with the theme of this year’s Summit – risk is a top priority, with an increased focus on de-risking through buy in/buy out strategies.”

Adds Paul Traynor, international insurance and European pension industry lead at BNY Mellon: “These challenges underline why the pensions segment remains a particular focus for investment and growth at BNY Mellon. We remain fully committed to innovating to develop new solutions to service our clients and other market participants in the regulatory, tax and accounting spheres, with a view to supporting a diverse range of asset and liability mixes, operational requirements and capital bases.”
