BNY Mellon Joins in Supporting a Guarantee of Equal Rights for All Americans, Regardless of Sex

JULY 30, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM TODD GIBBONS, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

To: All Employees

As the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia prepares to take up a lawsuit seeking to force the current administration to officially adopt the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), BNY Mellon has added its signature to an amicus brief to the court in full support of the plaintiff states seeking a guarantee of equal rights for all Americans, regardless of sex, as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The brief supports three plaintiff states, Illinois, Nevada and Virginia, which were the last states to ratify the ERA, bringing the total to 38 states and crossing the threshold necessary for it to be added to the U.S. Constitution. We are asking the Court to recognize the adoption of the ERA and, thus declare, once and for all, that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex.

As a longtime advocate of equal rights, our company has signed other statements supportive of the ERA in the past. We are now joining with more than 100 leading U.S. companies, including Apple, Bloomberg, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Google, Microsoft and Morgan Stanley, in encouraging the court to do the right thing.

We should all be proud to stand with other companies in the fight for equality. The adoption of the ERA is long overdue, and our advocacy evidences our resolve to make an impact that benefits our employees and society as a whole.
