Meet Srimathi

I grew up in Chennai, India. I was always encouraged to dream big, but like many Indian parents, my parents also wanted me to go into medicine. I had other plans.

While in college, I made documentary films and worked for All India Radio, India's public broadcaster, as a part-time RJ. I started at a PR consulting firm. Later I joined BNY Mellon where I continued my journey in marketing.

To gain as many experiences as possible, I raised my hand to take up a role in data management, operations and business analysis. I also obtained FINRA licenses Series 7 and 24. Today my team supports Pershing Wealth Solutions and Pershing Global Strategy and Product Management.

I demonstrate the BNY Mellon value Courage to Lead by always wanting to go beyond my job description and create value for the firm. I have ensured that people consciously include everyone relevant in the conversation and will always try to voice out my opinions.

I initiated a development program for mid-career female professionals in India who helped strengthen a group of employees who were getting ready to become vice presidents. The benefits of this Aspiring Leaders Program created an opportunity to expand it across Pershing globally. Another accomplishment that I’m proud of is when I trained garment makers in rural India on digital commerce to help them enhance their business and grow their market globally as part of a community initiative from BNY Mellon’s employee resource group Women’s Initiatives Network India.

History seldom showcases women's narratives. Women's History Month is an opportunity to retell the stories we know in a different light; to celebrate grit and patience; to draw inspiration to create a future that is inclusive and appreciates equity.

The advice I have for young women who are just beginning their careers is to have patience. Don't be afraid to be different. Don't be afraid to aim big. Do not limit yourself to accommodate the world around you. Look beyond the titles and monetary benefits. Focus on the change you bring, the impact you create.

I admire people who don't give up. I admire people who face challenges head-on. I know a lot of women and men who do all of this, and I aspire to be one of them.

Organizations need to make a conscious effort to increase the presence of women in leadership roles. This could mean developing frontline managers to be allies for inclusive growth or offering flexible work arrangements to enable advancement in people's careers. Organizations have a big role to play in normalizing women in leadership roles.

When people have low expectations of you because you are a woman, it can be demeaning both to you and your gender. I have rendered those words powerless by proving them wrong. When a woman succeeds, attributing her success to efforts, skills and results can be tough for many. This creates a lot of stress, but I overcame that by ignoring the narratives that don't matter.
