Money market funds (MMF) play an important role in providing short-term investment solutions to investors. European Union (EU) regulators announced the implementation of several EU Money Market Rule changes that will go into effect on 21 Jan 2019 for existing MMFs and on 21 July 2018 for new MMFs.

The Regulation on Money Market Funds was published in the European Union Official Journal on 30th June 2017. The regulation is designed to protect investors from liquidity and redemption risks in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. It imposes new rules on investment policy, risk management, valuations and transparency.
