A new approach to management and leadership development is changing the way we help our people grow. We’re providing our managers with the learning experiences, practical skills and tools to effectively lead and develop their teams.
To ensure the strength, depth and continuity of our leadership, we focused on assessing and developing the capabilities of our managers and leaders at all levels. This commitment establishes shared leadership expectations and drives our high-performance culture. More importantly, it’s an investment in our people and in our future business success.
In 2016, we developed and launched a new management and leadership development strategy. It is firmly grounded in our business strategy and employee feedback mechanisms, such as our employee engagement survey. The goal is to support global business priorities and cultivate a winning, high-performance team culture by growing great managers and leaders. We do this by giving our managers and leaders tools to operate effectively in the evolving business environment and equipping them with practical skills and tools that can be immediately implemented to bring our strategy to life. Our management and leadership development program is vertically aligned around core topics of feedback and development, managing for innovation and customer focus, as well as understanding our people’s personal styles and development needs.
“Having the ability to stay within the same firm, and to grow and to continue to discover and challenge yourself, that’s definitely a big plus to BNY Mellon.”Alex Jovanovich, Managing Director, Investment Services Technology
To ensure our most senior executives continue to hone their leadership skills and strategic mindset, BNY Mellon Chairman Gerald Hassell sponsors our distinctive CEO Signature Program. Gerald is highly involved in the design and delivery of the program to ensure we grow our top 25 executives to lead the BNY Mellon Way.
Through our needs assessment, we learned our managers prefer on-demand programs, which enable them to continue meeting the high performance demands of their jobs while pursuing lifelong learning. Our programs offer a flexible approach, mixing various types of virtual, distance and face-to-face training. Curricula are delivered using leading edge online technology, engaging and igniting communities of leaders across the globe.
We strongly believe that enabling our leaders to teach and facilitate some of the courses builds our learning capacity in the long-term. Last year, more than 40 leaders served as program presenters. Reza Sarmasti, Managing Director, Corporate Tax – Finance, summarized well the impact on leaders and the value to our people: “When we go through these types of training programs, it's a two-way investment. BNY Mellon is making an investment in my professional development and, in turn, I'm making an investment in the development of my colleagues. I’ve been able to really discern where I can add the most value in my role and it’s improved my delegation with my team.”
Our goal is to give approximately 9,000 managers, at all levels of BNY Mellon, a competitive edge. More than 2,000 leaders from the U.S., EMEA, India and APAC regions participated in the management and leadership development programs in 2016. More managers are expected to participate in the programs over the next three years.
