UK Prime Minister Theresa May engaged our people in London in a discussion about the importance of a business-led approach to diversity and inclusion. Find out how we’re taking a market-leading approach to drive better business results.
More than 100 clients and guests participated in an event featuring a conversation between then Rt. Hon. UK Prime Minister Theresa May, MP British Home Secretary (and now UK Prime Minister) and Jyoti Chopra, BNY Mellon Head of Global Citizenship and Sustainability. The discussion focused on the importance of a business-led approach to diversity and inclusion (D&I) that engages distinctive perspectives, experiences and backgrounds to help transform the world’s most pressing and complex challenges into opportunities. Prime Minister May praised BNY Mellon for embedding diversity and inclusion in the company’s culture. She also emphasized that diversity is more than mere numbers; it’s the foundation of a dynamic workplace where individuals can speak up, grow and improve communities and lives. Jyoti observed: “Diversity is about bridging the divide across all sectors of society - it spans and yet transcends business, government and politics. It is indeed about harnessing the skills and experiences from both the public and private sectors, inclusive of the military and civil service arenas.”
D&I at BNY Mellon takes a progressive, market-leading approach that aligns D&I objectives with strategic business goals and priorities and client service goals. We call it “Diversity & Inclusion 2.0” (D&I 2.0) for its forward-looking stance that moves us beyond the traditional focus on immutable attributes, like gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. We’re placing greater emphasis on inclusion that empowers our people to uncover their authentic selves and show up, fully, at work. Acquired attributes, such as cognitive diversity, global acumen, generational savvy, multicultural competency, social diversity and work-life agility, enable our people to make singular contributions, to shine as individuals and drive our company forward. D&I 2.0 helps keep the spark of creativity alive, which fuels innovation and transformation and enables us to bring fresh perspectives and uncommon solutions to our clients.
Across our business, D&I 2.0 is taking hold, enhancing our career experiences and the value we deliver to clients. We’re convening discussions across our industry – bringing together leaders who share our commitment to talent and our passion to make a difference – to draw greater attention to D&I as a business imperative, including its role in managing risk.
