Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

March 2016

We’re committed to advocating for climate change action. Environmental responsibility isn’t a separate strategy or decision; it’s a key part of our commitment to being invested in integrity and contributing to the health and resiliency of global financial markets.

BNY Mellon became carbon neutral in 2015, achieving a major environmental milestone. Carbon neutrality is reached when an organization’s net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are equal to zero. LEARN MORE

Our priorities include:

  • Reducing GHG emissions by 40 percent — three years ahead of our goal
  • Remaining carbon-neutral
  • Pursuing green building certifications for our facilities
  • Continuing our recycling and waste-reduction efforts and water conservation tactics

We have implemented LEED certification at 35 U.S. and international locations, which accounts for 23 percent of our global footprint. LEARN MORE

We’re the world’s only financial institution to achieve perfect scores from the CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) for both climate change disclosure and performance — for the third consecutive year. LEARN MORE

“As the investments company for the world and an integral part of the world's financial ecosystem, we have the capacity — and a strong moral responsibility — to be leaders. Taking strategic action to mitigate climate change is important for our clients and our investors. It is also the right thing to do for our world.”

— Gerald Hassell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

We’re one of only two U.S. diversified financial services companies named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) — for the second consecutive year, in September 2015; and, for the third consecutive year, we’ve been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America).

One of the most highly regarded global sustainability indices, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) tracks the stock performance of leading businesses across 24 industry groups globally, based on RobecoSAM's analysis of financially material environmental, social and governance factors.
