A major Japanese insurance company client took notice of BNY Mellon’s consistent 100 percent rating on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and sought our advice. In an effort to improve its own diversity and inclusion initiatives, the client asked its BNY Mellon client service team to share insights, especially relating to LGBTQA employees. A member of the client service team, who is also a leader of PRISM, coordinated input from BNY Mellon Human Resources, Marketing and Wealth Management professionals to provide the client with a picture of PRISM ― its mission, governance structure, achievements and goals, as well as experiences and best practices gleaned from working with LGBTQA married and non-married clients. As a result, the client decided to adopt a new policy that allows partners in a same-sex couple to designate each other as a beneficiary of life insurance, thereby granting rights to same-sex couples, equivalent to the designation of legally married spouses. BNY Mellon professionals recently joined forces to develop a first-of-its-kind online LGBTQA tax resource that offers free legal assistance to same-sex married couples in the U.S. It provides a state-by-state list of reporting regulations and tips that LGBTQA couples can use when preparing their tax returns.
