Managing Director, Head of Global Risk Solutions
BNY Mellon Asset Servicing
Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) has been in the news lately as more institutions are being asked to manage their pension, endowment, or other investments in support of environmental or socially responsible guidelines. BNY Mellon actively works with our clients to facilitate the monitoring of their socially responsible investment guidelines and as a corporation; BNY Mellon is committed to ensuring that we manage our own Corporate Social Responsibility.
In September, BNY Mellon was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and, for the second consecutive year, to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America). One of the most highly regarded global sustainability indices, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) family tracks the stock performance of leading sustainability-driven businesses globally and is offered jointly by the S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM, a Swiss investment specialist that focuses exclusively on sustainability investing.
Launched in 1999, the DJSI served as the first global sustainability benchmarks. The DJSI family includes companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics. RobecoSAM invites over 3,000 publicly traded companies, including 800 companies in emerging markets, to report annually on their sustainability practices.
BNY Mellon was one of only 11 diversified financials companies selected for inclusion in DJSI World from more than 100 invited companies. Inclusion in DJSI World and North America was based on RobecoSAM's in-depth analysis of economic, social and environmental criteria.
The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) screening provided by the Global Risk Solutions business was a component of BNY Mellon’s response to the DJSI survey again this year. Through our Compliance Monitoring service, clients are able to screen their investments against more than 50 Socially Responsible Investment categories including Potential Carbon/Fossil Fuel divestment and Geo-Political Sanctions.
We believe that our membership within the DJSI indices and offering robust capabilities supporting SRI/ESG/Sustainability will benefit our clients on the environmental and social drivers of risk and return.
It is important to note that BNY Mellon's global social responsibility priority focus areas include ethics and transparency; strong governance; responsible investments; operational reliability and effectiveness; excellent talent; and community commitment.
