Faces of BNY Mellon: Nicholas

We believe the greatest investment we make is in our people. Get to know the men and women who make BNY Mellon a world-class financial institution. Meet Nicholas, Global Head of OTC Valuation, Global Derivatives – Security Operations.

My Role

Each day, our team values over 60,000 derivatives using a variety of data sources and mathematical models. Since derivatives are not traded on an exchange, like a stock for instance, their values are not readily apparent and known. It’s through the work of my team and I that investors come to know the value of derivatives.

A Day in My Life

I spend much of my day working with clients – both existing and potential – walking them through our quantitative & operational processes, explaining how we arrived at a particular valuation, and pitching new business. I also spend a considerable amount of time with my team around the globe, making sure we’re all heading in the same direction strategically, and offering my support where necessary.

“Five years after joining BNY Mellon, I was asked to go to Europe and present a large piece of business to a potential client. It resulted in a big business win and an even bigger personal career win.”

Three Things That Surprised Me After I Started Working at BNY Mellon

  • The people here are great. Everyone is friendly, motivated and hardworking, which makes BNY Mellon a great culture to be a part of.
  • My ability to succeed and progress within the company has been exceptional. Working with senior-level executives has really given me a chance to excel in every way possible.
  • Earning the BNY Mellon Star award, after the large piece of business won, I did not think a company this large would actually find a way to recognize their employees as well as BNY Mellon did/does.

Where I want to be in 5 years

I see myself continuing in the derivatives space five years from now. I also see myself completing my dual master’s degree in MBA Finance and Masters in Quantitative Finance at Northeastern University. By that time, I would also like to be at a more senior level and have more responsibility, and possibly even a move to our Asset Management side of BNY Mellon.
