Jackielyn Lao
Lead Analyst, Business Change Team in Clearing and Collateral Management,
Singapore
From an early age, I was quickly confronted with different languages, cultures, and backgrounds.
I was born in a small village in the northern part of the Philippines and then moved with my parents to different countries across Asia and Europe. My father is of Chinese origin and my mother is Filipina. At home, we spoke Tagalog and English. I attended primary and middle school in Vienna, Austria, which is where I learned to speak German, and is one of the places I call home. While I was attending university in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to study for one year in Shanghai, China. It was an enriching experience to be exposed to the culture and see the country develop at such a rapid pace. Afterwards, I moved back to the Netherlands, to complete by MBA in Amsterdam.
In 2011, I joined BNY Mellon as a collateral management agent in Brussels, Belgium, gaining experience across teams, such as operations, client services, portfolio servicing, and now in business change. My current role is in Singapore – I’m very grateful I was able to move here and be closer to my heritage and give my children the chance to immerse themselves into the Asian culture. BNY Mellon has given me the opportunity to move around and explore different aspects of the business. This is what keeps it exciting for me, as well as the diversity of the colleagues I work with in my day-to-day routine.
When I started my career as an operation agent in collateral management, we used to input a lot of the trades and securities movements manually. I still remember how exciting every day was, working in a very dynamic environment. Since then, the rollout of the Future of Collateral has made incredible progress in terms of automation and workflow efficiencies.
According to the World Economic Forum’s 2021 Gender Gap Report, it will take an average of 136 years for women and men to reach parity worldwide. International Women’s Day celebrates all the efforts of everyone who has worked to close those gaps. But we clearly have a long way to go and a continuous effort to raise awareness is crucial. It is a topic I am very passionate about, and I believe we all have a part to play when it comes to gender equality.
Our own personal values reflect what is most important to us – it is a gift if the company you work for has those same values. I am a big supporter of our company value of Strength in Diversity and am involved with the Women’s Initiatives Network, our employee business resource group dedicated to supporting the advancement of women at BNY Mellon. Supporting diversity, equity and inclusion increases engagement, builds connections with our colleagues, and creates a positive impact on our teams.
