Chief Executive Officer of BNY Mellon Government Securities Services Corp., Clearance & Collateral Management and Credit Services

New York, NY

Meet Brian

Although I was born in the Midwest and grew up in Dublin, I always knew that I wanted to move to New York City, the center of capital markets, to begin my career in banking. After studying finance and accounting in Manhattan, I was accepted into the credit training program at Bank of New York (now BNY Mellon).

Before my current role leading the Clearance and Collateral Management team, I led Global Client Management, prior to that Pershing Prime Services, and before that I was CEO of Alternative Investments Services. Holding these positions in different areas of the organization has given me an understanding of our purpose and impact in financial services.

My career at BNY Mellon has also allowed me to grow in different ways. One way has been through my involvement in our Employee/Business Resource Groups (E/BRGs), including the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), IMPACT and as the executive sponsor for GENEDGE since 2019. E/BRGs play an important role, providing a space for employees to focus on what they care about, make a difference and improve the company’s work culture. At the heart of each E/BRG is a desire to support the values and behaviors that power us to succeed across the financial world.

Those values include Integrity, strength in diversity, courage to lead, and passion for excellence, which I believe is the foundational value. Our Passion for Excellence shined brightly during the uncertainty of the pandemic, where we saw a large increase in transaction volume, making it imperative to deliver what our clients needed with a laser focus, resiliency and overall excellence in a virtual environment. Every day, we bring our core values to how we engage with our clients.

One of the more notable programs I have been able to participate in recently has been GENEDGE’s Reverse Mentoring Program. Along with my mentor, Catia Filipa da Costa Martins, we focused on three areas: communication, business strategy and digital presence. With Catia’s expertise in communications and HR, we explored effective ways to communicate in a virtual environment, how to collaborate with executive committees and other governance bodies about our future strategy and how to tell stories through digital communications.

The mentoring program has been an enlightening experience. Learning from a colleague in a different business or career stage who offers another perspective and provides an opportunity for growth is something that I highly recommend.

Personally, I appreciate that BNY Mellon focuses on providing a positive work-life balance for employees. This employee-centric culture has allowed me to explore new hobbies and interests in my free time. Outside of work, you can find me hitting the links and practicing my golf swing. I’m also a big fan of attending sporting events with my four teenagers, three of whom are triplets!
