July 2020

By Frances Barney

With the global pandemic and its impact on the financial markets still unfolding, it remains to be seen what the longer term financial impacts on endowments and foundations (E&Fs) will be. Yet it is timely to delve deeper into performance and allocation trends for these institutions. How were E&Fs performing and allocating when entering this crisis? And how have these institutions been impacted so far?

This BNY Mellon study highlights performance and asset allocation trends for a universe of 93 endowments and foundations (E&Fs) using aggregate data from BNY Mellon’s Asset Strategy View®. The data shows comparative analysis of institutions with less than $1B (comprising 47 institutions) and greater than $1B (comprising 46 institutions) in assets. Our study examines trends for the most recent five calendar years, in addition to looking at Q1 2020 data.

Through publishing this study’s analysis, our aim is to share information on investment performance and asset allocation trends to inform the dialogue at a critical time for those dedicated to the long-term success of not-for-profits and their diverse missions.
